:: Job Experience ::

After much persuasion by the Lepaqueen, I have decided to create an entry. How is everyone? I have hardly heard from any of you. I know Meifang is in Genting. How about the rest of you- Adila, Asrie & Harti? I think a meet up is due soon. Any one second my opinion?

Anyway, let me blog about my job experience at the Singapore Science Centre which will be drawing to an emotional close tomorrow as it is the last day of the Singapore Youth Science Festival. Anyway, my job is that of a lecturer for a series of classes of DNA and mutation. Basically, it is a fun and interactive class aimed at Primary & Secondary school children. We teach them about DNA and mutation via illustration of the common fruitfly. Students learn the normal boring stuff about DNA and then they can make flies! They also can view real life mutated flies under the stereoscope! Well, I will try to make a few flies for you guys if possible tomorrow.

I have been lecturing on the same topic for almost 20 classes so I must be the most robotic person in the world right at this moment. I wonder what teachers feel like mann although their repetitive cycle is on a yearly basis unless they take multiple classes. Oh well! But I had the most of fun teaching this kids and it was such a pleasure to be in the midst of great colleagues and vibrant youth. Makes me feel less adult and takes me out of the microcosm of reality that I am already 20!

Had a few funny experiences with kids. I will share some of the more less embarrassing ones.

During the first day, there was this Primary Five girl who walked up to me and asked to go to her table and sit beside her and help her make the fly. I could not say No because the girl was just so adorable and cute. Anyway, I obliged and sat beside her guiding her on making the fly. After that she flipped my Staff Card and read my name as "Hamid Rambutan". She shouted it damn loud and the entire class starting calling me Mr Rambutan! Grrr! And she grew so possessive of me. She didn't let me leave her side mann! And she even made a fly and wrote my name on it and gave me as a parting gift! I was so touched! Never did I imagine that I would be so touched at someone giving me a paper fly! And as she was walking out of the lab, she turned around and screamed, "Bye Bye Rambutan!" before giggling away. Children are really adorable aren't they?!

Then a more recent one occured. I'll keep this one short. Basically, the students have to fill up this feedback form for the Science Centre. And I was takind a Lower Secondary class. So there were this group of girls who wrote under the heading "3 things I would like to know in future lessons" :

1) The Instructor's Name
2) The Instuctor's Number
3) Whether the Instructor has a girlfriend

Unfortunately, I didn't know this. Not even when a girl from the group came to ask for my name and number at the end of the lesson! Geeee! Then my supervisor started laughing heartily at the end of the session and she went like, "Hamid, you are going to do all the lessons from now on." And that is how I ended up lecturing all the lessons for the series. But it was a nice experience.
